Pune Shocker: Cab Driver Bites Off IT Engineer’s Finger Over Fare Dispute In Hinjewadi
Argument over app fare vs meter rate turns violent; driver arrested after gruesome attack
A shocking incident has emerged from Pune’s Hinjewadi IT hub, where a cab driver allegedly bit off part of an IT engineer’s finger following a dispute over the ride fare.
The incident took place on Monday afternoon when the 42-year-old engineer, a resident of Nana Peth, had booked a cab through the Rapido app after finishing his shift in Hinjewadi Phase 1.
Dispute Over Fare Turns Violent
According to police, the argument began even before the journey started. The driver allegedly insisted that the fare would be charged as per the meter instead of the amount shown on the app.
When the passenger refused to pay the higher fare, a verbal altercation broke out, which quickly escalated into a physical fight.
Gruesome Attack Leaves Finger Severed
During the scuffle, the driver allegedly attacked the engineer and bit two fingers of his left hand. In the assault, a portion of one finger was severed, leaving the victim seriously injured.
Eyewitness accounts and reports suggest that the driver held the victim’s hand and bit it with such force that a part of the finger was torn off.
The injured engineer was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital, where he received medical treatment.
Police Action And Arrest
The victim filed a complaint the following day after receiving treatment. Based on the complaint, Hinjewadi police registered an FIR and arrested the accused driver.
Police said, “The dispute began even before the ride started, as the driver insisted that the fare would be as per the ‘meter’. The victim refused, following which the argument escalated.”
The accused has been booked under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including charges of voluntarily causing grievous hurt and intentional insult aimed at provoking breach of peace.
Investigation Ongoing
The accused was produced before a court following his arrest. Further investigation is underway to determine all aspects of the incident.
A response from the cab service platform was awaited at the time of reporting.
