Pune, April 11, 2026: In a significant step towards strengthening local security infrastructure, the Pune Police have installed CCTV cameras at key locations in the Mohammadwadi–Undri area, including one each outside Ganga Kingston and Pristine Viva Society, along with five additional surveillance points across Undri.

The initiative comes in response to long-standing demands from residents for enhanced monitoring and crime prevention measures.

Residents of Mohammadwadi and Undri have repeatedly raised concerns over increasing population density, isolated stretches, and limited police visibility in certain pockets.

Citizen groups and housing societies had been actively advocating for the installation of advanced surveillance systems, particularly AI-enabled CCTV cameras, to improve real-time monitoring and assist in quicker response to incidents.

The effort was facilitated by senior journalists Nadeem Inamdar and Sandeep Kolhatkar, who coordinated with authorities to push forward the proposal in the interest of public safety.

Speaking on the development, Nadeem Inamdar expressed gratitude towards senior police officials for their prompt support.

“We sincerely thank Commissioner of Police Amitesh Kumar and ACP (IT) Vivek Pawar for their proactive approach and support in enhancing citizen safety. This initiative reflects a strong commitment by the Pune Police towards addressing the genuine concerns of residents in fast-growing areas like Mohammadwadi and Undri,” said Nadeem Inamdar, Senior Journalist, Hindustan Times.

Echoing similar sentiments, Sandeep Kolhatkar also acknowledged the role of the police leadership in facilitating the installations.

“We appreciate the encouragement and backing provided by Commissioner Amitesh Kumar and ACP Vivek Pawar in implementing this important safety measure. The installation of CCTV cameras is a crucial step towards ensuring better surveillance and deterrence, especially in rapidly developing suburban areas,” said Sandeep Kolhatkar, Western Maharashtra Bureau Chief, PTI.

Local residents have welcomed the move, stating that the presence of CCTV cameras will not only act as a deterrent to criminal activities but also aid law enforcement agencies in investigation and monitoring.

The demand for AI-enabled CCTV systems had gained momentum over the past few months, with several housing societies and citizen forums highlighting the need for smarter surveillance solutions capable of facial recognition, vehicle tracking, and real-time alerts. Residents believe that such systems will be particularly useful in areas like Undri and Mohammadwadi, where urban expansion has outpaced infrastructure development.

Police officials indicated that the newly installed cameras will be integrated into the city’s broader surveillance network, allowing for better coordination and monitoring. Authorities have also assured residents that additional installations will be considered based on feasibility and requirement.

This collaborative effort between citizens, media, and the police department underscores the importance of community-driven initiatives in addressing urban safety challenges.

The CCTV installations in Undri and Mohammadwadi also align with the Maharashtra Home Department’s broader push for technology-driven policing and urban surveillance. The state, in coordination with Pune Police, has already rolled out large-scale AI-enabled CCTV networks under the “Safe City” initiative, with nearly 1,000 high-resolution cameras installed across 178 vulnerable locations to monitor isolated and crime-prone areas. These systems are equipped with advanced capabilities such as real-time monitoring, facial recognition, and analytics to detect suspicious activity and improve response time.

Additionally, authorities are working towards integrating thousands of public and private cameras into a centralised network, including ongoing efforts to geotag over 3,000 cameras across Pune for faster investigation access. Officials indicate that such initiatives are part of a larger long-term investment—estimated to run into several hundred crores—aimed at building a unified, AI-driven surveillance grid across urban Maharashtra. This expansion is particularly significant for rapidly growing suburbs like Undri and Mohammadwadi, where infrastructure has struggled to keep pace with population growth and security concerns.
