Wagholi: PMC Demolishes 52,250 Sq Ft Of Illegal RMC Plants, Sheds In Early Morning Drive
Action taken at 2 am in Mahalaxmi Lawns and Kharadi areas; allegations of selective demolition surface
In a major anti-encroachment drive, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) demolished illegal constructions spread across 52,250 square feet, including Ready Mix Concrete (RMC) plants and unauthorized sheds in Wagholi and nearby areas.
The action began in the early hours of April 15 around 2 am and targeted RMC plants located in the Mahalaxmi Lawns area, Lohegaon–Khandve Nagar, and parts of Pune Peth. Officials also carried out demolition of unauthorized structures in the Kharadi EON IT Park area.
The operation was conducted under the direction of senior civic officials, with teams from the encroachment department deployed on-site. The drive involved a large workforce, including security personnel, inspectors, and labourers, along with heavy machinery.
According to officials, a total of seven RMC plants were demolished during the operation. Overall, around 52,250 square feet of illegal kutcha and pucca constructions, including sheds and plant structures, were removed.
However, the action has sparked controversy, with allegations of inconsistency in enforcement. It has been claimed that there were 13 such plants in the area, but action was taken against only seven, while others were left untouched.
Plant owners also alleged that the demolition was carried out without prior notice and questioned the timing of the operation, which was conducted during early morning hours. Concerns were also raised over possible bias in selecting which units faced action.
Reports indicate that a verbal clash took place between officials and a local corporator during the operation.
Despite the controversy, some local residents expressed satisfaction, stating that the drive would help reduce pollution and regulate unauthorized industrial activity in the area.
The civic body is expected to continue such drives as part of its broader efforts to curb illegal constructions and enforce urban planning norms in rapidly developing areas of Pune.
