Android Malware Alert: ‘God Mode’ Virus Can Take Over Devices; Here’s How to Detect and Remove It
A new Android “God Mode” malware can control devices, steal data, and block uninstallation. Learn how to identify infected phones and remove the virus safely.
A new and dangerous category of Android malware, often referred to as the “God Mode” virus, has raised serious concerns among cybersecurity agencies due to its ability to take near-complete control of infected smartphones. The malware is designed to steal sensitive data, intercept OTPs, and prevent users from uninstalling it.
According to cybersecurity advisories, the malware typically disguises itself as legitimate apps such as banking services, utility tools, or customer support platforms. It is often spread through phishing links or APK files shared via messaging platforms, tricking users into installing it.
How the Malware Works
The virus exploits Android’s Accessibility Services, a feature meant to assist users with disabilities. Once permission is granted, the malware can monitor screen activity, read messages, track keystrokes, and even perform actions without the user’s knowledge.
It can intercept SMS messages, including one-time passwords (OTPs), access contacts, initiate calls, and even activate the device camera in the background. Experts warn that it also uses overlay attacks—displaying fake screens over real apps—to steal sensitive information, particularly from banking applications.
Signs Your Device May Be Infected
Users should remain alert to unusual device behaviour, including:
- Frequent requests for Accessibility permissions
- Unknown apps setting themselves as default launcher
- Hidden apps without icons
- Sudden or unexplained SMS activity
- Call forwarding being enabled automatically
- Inability to uninstall certain apps or revoke permissions
How to Remove the Malware
Experts recommend the following steps to remove the threat:
- Restart the device in Safe Mode to disable third-party apps
- Go to Settings and uninstall suspicious applications
- Reset the default launcher to a system launcher
- Review and disable unknown services in Accessibility Settings
- Check Device Admin permissions and remove unauthorized access
- Dial ##002# to cancel any call forwarding
- Restart the device and monitor for unusual activity
If the issue persists, performing a factory reset may be necessary.
Precautionary Measures
Users are advised to download apps only from trusted sources like the Google Play Store and avoid installing APK files from unknown links. Any suspicious activity or cyber fraud can be reported on the national cybercrime portal or helpline 1930.
