May 4, 2026: In a decisive outcome, Sunetra Pawar secured a historic win in the Baramati Assembly by-election, emerging with a massive mandate and setting a new benchmark in the constituency’s electoral history.

The candidate, backed by Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar’s faction, polled 2,18,930 votes, marking one of the highest victory margins recorded in the region. From the early stages of counting, Pawar maintained a dominant lead, eventually turning the contest into a one-sided affair.

The bypoll had drawn significant attention across Maharashtra, particularly after the political developments within the Nationalist Congress Party. Despite Baramati being considered a traditional stronghold of the party, the election saw limited opposition, with no major challenger mounting a strong campaign.

Efforts were reportedly made by ruling alliance leaders to avoid a contest and ensure an unopposed election. While some parties initially fielded candidates, key contenders later withdrew nominations before the deadline, resulting in a largely uncontested scenario. Leaders from across factions, including supporters of Sharad Pawar, extended backing to Sunetra Pawar during the campaign.

With this result, Sunetra Pawar has surpassed the previous record held by Ajit Pawar, who had won the Baramati seat in 2019 with a margin of over 1.65 lakh votes. The latest margin now stands as a new high for the constituency.

Baramati voters have consistently delivered strong mandates in past elections. Ajit Pawar himself has been elected multiple times from the seat, often with significant margins. The 2026 bypoll result further reinforces the constituency’s trend of decisive outcomes.

The final results underline a clear consolidation of support in favour of Sunetra Pawar, reflecting both political backing and voter confidence in her leadership.
