Pune: 45-Metre-High Tricolour Flag Unveiled At Sanvidhan Chowk In Wanawadi
Pune, May 7, 2026: A 45-metre-high national flag was hoisted at Sanvidhan Chowk in Wanawadi during the inauguration of a newly installed flagpole by Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee president Harshvardhan Sapkal.
The flagpole was installed through the efforts of former mayor and Prabhag 18 Corporator Prashant Jagtap and former corporator Ratnaprabha Jagtap. Sanvidhan Chowk located between the State Reserve Police Force area and the Army Cantonment Wanawadi, has now become a prominent landmark with the installation of the towering Tricolour.
Several Congress leaders, former corporators, office-bearers, party workers, citizens and local residents attended the event. Among those present were Pune City District Congress Committee president Arvind Shinde, former minister Ramesh Bagwe, former MLA Mohan Joshi, and corporator and ward committee chairman Sahil Kedari.
Following the inauguration ceremony, a meeting was organised by the Indian National Congress at the Mahatma Phule Sanskrutik Bhavan. Addressing the gathering, Harshvardhan Sapkal criticised the politics of the BJP and alleged that efforts were being made in the country and Maharashtra to divide society on the basis of caste and religion.
He said that installing the Tricolour in such an atmosphere was a commendable initiative and symbolised an effort to purify the “polluted environment.” Sapkal also raised concerns over increasing incidents of sexual assault, drug-related crimes, weapon-related offences and other criminal activities in Pune city, while criticising the functioning of the state home department.
