Pune Sees Sharp Rise In Cybercrime, Economic Offences And Crimes Against Women In 2024: NCRB Report
Pune, May 9, 2026: Pune recorded a notable increase in overall crime during 2024, with fresh data released by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) showing a rise in violent crimes, cyber offences, economic fraud and crimes against women and children.
As per the NCRB statistics, Pune registered 18,560 cases under the Indian Penal Code (IPC), Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and Special and Local Laws (SLL) in 2024. In comparison, the city had reported 17,022 cases in 2023 and 14,173 cases in 2022, indicating a steady increase in criminal activity over the last three years.
One of the biggest jumps was seen in violent crimes. Pune recorded 3,573 violent offences in 2024, significantly higher than 2,296 cases in 2023 and 2,417 in 2022. However, murder cases showed a gradual decline, dropping from 105 in 2022 to 101 in 2023 and 94 in 2024.
Kidnapping and abduction cases also remained high. The city reported 693 such offences in 2022, which rose to 787 in 2023 before slightly declining to 734 cases in 2024.
The NCRB report highlighted a continued rise in crimes against women. Pune registered 2,631 such cases in 2024, compared to 2,550 in 2023 and 2,074 in 2022.
Cases involving crimes against children also increased sharply over the past three years. The number of incidents rose from 732 in 2022 to 1,234 in 2023 and further to 1,330 in 2024.
At the same time, offences involving juveniles in conflict with law witnessed a decline. Pune recorded 278 such cases in 2022, 275 in 2023 and 102 cases in 2024.
Crimes targeting senior citizens also showed a steep rise. While the city reported 69 such cases in 2022 and 57 in 2023, the figure jumped to 151 in 2024.
Economic offences emerged as another major concern for law enforcement agencies. The number of cases nearly doubled from 1,207 in 2023 to 2,125 in 2024. In 2022, Pune had recorded 1,023 economic offence cases.
Cybercrime saw one of the sharpest increases in the NCRB report. Pune reported 357 cybercrime cases in 2022 and 487 in 2023, but the number surged to 1,504 cases in 2024.
Police officials believe the implementation of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), which replaced the IPC, may have contributed to better reporting and categorisation of offences. Authorities said the rising figures underline the growing need for stronger cyber security measures, preventive policing and focused action against organised and financial crimes in Pune.
