Mumbai, May 9, 2026: Maharashtra continued to record the highest number of corruption cases in the country in 2024, according to the latest data released by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB). The state registered 721 corruption-related cases during the year, remaining at the top nationally despite a slight drop from 812 cases reported in 2023.

The NCRB figures show that Maharashtra has consistently led the country in corruption cases for more than a decade. The state had recorded 1,316 cases in 2014, followed by 664 in 2020, 773 in 2021 and 749 in 2022.

Officials from the Maharashtra Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) attributed the high numbers to the agency’s extensive network and easier public access to complaint mechanisms across the state.

According to information available on the department’s official records, anti-corruption units were initially established in Mumbai and rural regions in 1946 before being centralised in 1953, helping the bureau build a wide operational presence over the years.

However, activists expressed concern over Maharashtra repeatedly topping the list. Separate data released by the Maharashtra ACB in 2025 showed that Nashik recorded the highest number of corruption offences within the state in 2024, with 154 registered cases, followed closely by the Pune region with 149 cases.

Experts noted that the higher number of registered corruption cases in Maharashtra could also reflect stronger enforcement and proactive investigation by authorities, while similar offences in other states may remain under-reported or see weaker action.
