Videos from a religious programme in Gujarat’s Junagadh district have gone viral after devotees were seen showering huge amounts of cash on stage during a bhajan performance. The incident has triggered mixed reactions on social media, with some calling it cultural fundraising and others criticising it as a display of wealth.

A devotional music event in Gujarat’s Junagadh district has drawn widespread attention online after videos showed a bhajan singer being nearly buried under piles of currency notes thrown by devotees during the programme.

The viral clips show attendees approaching the stage carrying sacks and bundles filled with cash. As the bhajan performance continued, devotees were seen tossing notes into the air and pouring large heaps of money around the singer and musicians.

Within minutes, the stage became covered with piles of currency notes while organisers and volunteers attempted to manage the growing amount of cash.

The videos quickly spread across social media platforms, triggering intense debate among users. While many people expressed shock over the public display of money, others defended the practice, calling it a long-standing cultural tradition linked to community fundraising events in Gujarat.

Several users criticised the incident online, questioning the need for such open displays of wealth during religious programmes.

One user wrote that showering money on singers looked “cheap” and suggested that people should instead donate privately or support social causes directly. Another user described the act as “an arrogant display of illegal wealth,” while another commented that such scenes were disturbing at a time when many people in the country continue to struggle with poverty and hunger.

At the same time, many social media users defended the practice and claimed that the money collected during such “dayro” and devotional programmes is often used for charitable purposes, religious activities and community welfare work.

Some users explained that such cultural events in Gujarat traditionally help raise funds for causes such as animal welfare, hostels, social trusts and future spiritual programmes.

According to organisers, the money collected during the event was not intended for the singer’s personal use. They reportedly clarified that the funds would instead be utilised for religious programmes, donations and welfare-related activities connected to the community.

The incident has once again sparked discussion online over the fine line between faith, cultural traditions and public displays of wealth at large religious gatherings.
