Pune: Baner Cancer Hospital Naming Row Sparks Debate; Shrinath Bhimale Faces Criticism
Pune, May 16, 2026: A controversy has erupted in Pune over the naming of a public cancer hospital in Baner after the father of a local political leader, triggering renewed debate on how civic institutions are branded and commemorated.
Pune BJP leader and Standing Committee Chairman Shrinath Bhimale has named the Baner Cancer Hospital after his father, Yashwant Bhimale, a decision that has drawn sharp criticism from citizens and activists who question the appropriateness of using public healthcare infrastructure for personal or family legacy recognition.

Veteran journalist and activist Vinita Deshmukh strongly opposed the move, terming it an attempt at political self-promotion. She argued that public institutions funded by taxpayers should remain neutral spaces dedicated solely to public service, rather than being associated with individual or family names.
Deshmukh further stated that citizens of Pune deserve transparency and fairness in civic decisions, adding that public assets should not be used to promote personality-driven narratives. She emphasised that healthcare infrastructure, especially a cancer hospital, must remain focused on patient welfare rather than symbolic naming controversies.
This is not the first such incident involving Bhimale. According to critics, a similar dispute had earlier emerged in Salisbury Park, where a public garden was named after his father. The decision had faced opposition at the time and was later challenged through legal channels, resulting in a reversal.
Residents and activists now allege a repeated pattern of using civic projects for personal legacy branding, calling for stricter guidelines on naming rights for public infrastructure.

The issue has sparked wider discussion among citizens of Pune, with many raising concerns about how public funds are used and whether naming decisions reflect public interest or individual influence. The matter continues to draw attention as civic transparency and governance practices come under scrutiny.
