Three coaches of the Ujjaini Express derailed near the Khand Gaon area close to Yog Nagri Rishikesh railway station in Uttarakhand late Monday night during a shunting movement inside the railway yard.

According to railway officials, the incident occurred at around 9:30 pm to 9:40 pm when the train was being moved towards the yard after operations at the station.

Officials confirmed that the train was empty at the time of the accident and no passengers were on board. No casualties or injuries were reported in the incident.

Railway sources said the locomotive reportedly collided with the buffer stop, also known as the dead end, located at the terminus of the shunting line inside the yard area.

The impact created heavy pressure on the coaches, leading to derailment.

As a result:

  • One coach was thrown off the tracks
  • Another coach buckled in the middle
  • Three coaches sustained damage overall

The accident happened within the station yard limits and not on the main running line.

The Ujjaini Express operates between Lakshmibai Nagar in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, and Yog Nagari Rishikesh in Uttarakhand.

Railway officials have started examining the exact cause of the incident and restoration work was initiated soon after the derailment.

Since the train was empty and the derailment occurred during yard movement operations, railway services and passenger safety were not significantly affected.
