Baner Land Dispute Turns Violent: Complaint Filed Against Businessman And Others After Alleged AttackÂ
Pune: PMC To Upgrade 135.8 km Of Roads At ₹167 Crore For 2027 Pune Grand Tour Pune, July 16, 2026: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has approved an ambitious plan to redevelop 135.8 km of roads across the city at an estimated cost of ₹167.25 crore in preparation for the 2027 Pune Grand Tour, an international cycling event scheduled to be held from January 26 to 31, 2027. The road network will be upgraded to international standards to meet the requirements of the prestigious cycling race while also improving everyday commuting infrastructure for Pune residents. According to PMC, the race route has already been finalised. Of the total 135.8 km, around 52.09 km comprises roads that were upgraded for the inaugural edition of the Pune Grand Tour, while the remaining 83.66 km includes new stretches that will now undergo redevelopment. PMC said the project will be executed in four separate packages to ensure better quality, efficient monitoring, and timely completion of the work.The upgraded roads will comply with international standards required for hosting the cycling event. The redevelopment will cover several key areas across Pune: Package 1: Aundh, Baner, Pashan, University Road and Range Hills. Package 2: Senapati Bapat Road, Kothrud, Karve Nagar, Sinhagad Road, Parvati Payatha, Sarasbaug and Khadakwasla. Package 3: Central Peth areas, Shivdarshan, Gangadham, Kondhwa, Bhavani Peth, Camp and Yewalewadi. Package 4: Bhairoba Nala, Magarpatta, Mundhwa, North Main Road, Vidhan Bhavan, Ganeshkhind Road, Fergusson College Road and Deccan. The first edition of the Pune Grand Tour, held earlier this year, received an encouraging response from participants and spectators. PMC officials said the latest road redevelopment project aims not only to support the successful hosting of the international cycling event but also to provide smoother, safer, and more durable roads for daily commuters across the city.
Pune, June 4, 2026: A long-running land dispute in Baner took a violent turn in the early hours of Sunday after an alleged attempt to take possession of a disputed plot near Tamhane Chowk. Baner Police have registered a case against 11 named individuals and 25 to 30 unidentified men and women in connection with the incident.
According to the complaint filed by Omkar Sanjay Tamhane (28), a resident of Baner, a legal dispute over the ownership and possession of a one-acre plot near Tamhane Chowk is currently pending between his father, Sanjay Tamhane, and businessman Prakash Dhariwal.
The complainant has claimed that a Pune court had issued an order on May 25, 2026, restraining Dhariwal from entering the disputed property or carrying out any construction work on the land.
As per the FIR, around 3.30 am on Sunday, a group of 25 to 30 men and women allegedly arrived at the site carrying sticks, rods and other weapons. They were also accompanied by a JCB machine and construction materials, including iron angles, metal sheets and cement.
The group allegedly began erecting a temporary sheet-metal boundary fence by installing iron structures on the plot. When Omkar Tamhane objected to the activity, some of the individuals reportedly told him they were acting on the instructions of Prakash Dhariwal, Prashant Mandekar and Milind Kothadia.
The complaint further states that while Omkar was recording the incident on his mobile phone, he was allegedly assaulted with sticks and rods. His brother, Swaraj Tamhane, who intervened during the altercation, was also allegedly attacked. Both sustained injuries and were admitted to Jupiter Hospital in Baner for treatment.
Based on the complaint, Baner Police have registered a case against Prakash Dhariwal, Prashant Mandekar, Milind Kothadia, Sukeshani Bansode, Supriya Panchal, Sana Mohammad Shaikh, Komal Shinde, Jannam Mohammad Shaikh, Uma Sunil Pawar, Archana Ovhal, Deepa Pintu William, along with 25 to 30 unidentified individuals.
The investigation is currently underway.
Police are examining the circumstances surrounding the alleged encroachment attempt and the assault, while further action will depend on the findings of the ongoing investigation.
