Pune Woman Dies By Suicide After Alleged Dowry Harassment; Husband Arrested
Pune, June 4, 2026: A 25-year-old married woman allegedly died by suicide after facing prolonged physical and mental harassment from her husband and in-laws over monetary demands and family disputes, police said. Chandan Nagar Police have arrested the husband and registered a case against his parents on charges of abetment of suicide and cruelty.
The deceased has been identified as Tejaswini Gorakh Sonawane, a resident of Tukaram Nagar. Her husband, Gorakh Sambhaji Sonawane (32), has been arrested in connection with the case. Police have also booked his parents, Sambhaji Sonawane (62) and Alka Sonawane (55).
The complaint was lodged by Tejaswini’s father, a resident of Ahilyanagar.
According to police, Tejaswini married Gorakh Sonawane in June 2021. Soon after the marriage, she was allegedly subjected to repeated demands for money from her parental family. The complaint alleges that her husband and in-laws frequently pressured her family for financial assistance, including funds for purchasing a car and a house.
Investigators said the harassment continued over the years, causing significant emotional and mental distress to the young woman.
The complaint further states that during the recently observed Adhik Maas period, Tejaswini’s parents invited their son-in-law for a traditional family meal. It is alleged that Gorakh demanded a gold ring as part of the customary gifts associated with the occasion. However, Tejaswini’s parents instead presented him with clothing as a gesture of respect.
Following the visit, the husband and his family allegedly intensified their harassment of Tejaswini over the absence of the gold ring, according to the complaint.
Police said Tejaswini died by suicide on June 3, 2026. Her family has alleged that the continued physical and mental harassment drove her to take the extreme step.
After receiving the complaint, Chandan Nagar Police registered a case and arrested Gorakh Sonawane. Further investigation is underway to determine the full circumstances leading to the woman’s death.
Assistant Police Inspector Vinod Dhurve is conducting the investigation.
Police have appealed to individuals facing domestic abuse or harassment to seek help from family members, support services, or law enforcement authorities before situations escalate.
