Pune, June 4: An IT couple from Pune has ended their marriage in divorce after their disputes over sharing expenses equally in every aspect of their lives. Both employed in the IT sector had an arranged marriage in 2023.
According to the details presented by the family court, within a few months of their marriage, they had arguments over finances and communication. The husband earned significantly more than his wife but allegedly insisted on a strict “50-50” arrangement for all the expenses.
The wife claimed that she was expected to pay half of every cost, including restaurant bills, vacations, household expenses and gifts purchased for her.
As per the court submissions, the husband reportedly maintained detailed records of family spending and expected equal financial contributions despite the difference in their incomes. The wife also alleged that he frequently questioned whether she was providing financial support to her parents.
Court records stated that they had been living separately for more than a year and had not shared a marital relationship during that period.
Due to their disagreements, the couple decided to end their marriage by mutual consent. Their divorce petition was filed on May 13 and was disposed of on May 22, with the court granting the divorce in just nine days.
As both parties were firm with their decisions, the matter was reportedly resolved during the first hearing. The wife had also paid the entire cost of the divorce proceedings.
The couple’s advocate said that the husband insisted on every expense being shared equally, which led to conflicts in the marriage. The advocate further said that a balance could not be achieved between financial independence and expectations, ultimately leading to the breakdown of the relationship.
The incident has drawn attention towards money management in relationships with users sharing different views on equal expense and income-based contributions.
