Pune: New Western Mall–DP Road Link Opens In Aundh, Set To Ease Congestion
Pune, June 8, 2026: In a significant step towards easing traffic congestion in Aundh, a new road connecting Western Mall directly to Aundh DP Road has been opened to the public. The initiative is expected to reduce vehicle load on the busy Mahadji Shinde Road and provide a smoother route for motorists travelling towards Pune city.
The new connection was inaugurated by Additional Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Manoj Patil in the presence of MLA Siddharth Shirole, Deputy Mayor of Pune Parshuram Wadekar, Corporator Sunny Vinayak Nimhan and Bhakti Gaikwad, local representatives, residents, and other dignitaries.
Until now, vehicles exiting Western Mall had to merge onto Mahadji Shinde Road and take a U-turn near Bhale Chowk to head towards the city. This traffic movement often resulted in congestion, particularly during peak hours, causing delays and inconvenience for commuters.
To address the issue, PMC Corporator Sunny Vinayak Nimhan, in coordination with the mall management, facilitated the development of a direct access road by opening a section of the mall’s boundary wall and creating a connection to Aundh DP Road.
With the new arrangement, vehicles leaving the mall and heading towards Pune can now directly access DP Road without entering Mahadji Shinde Road. Traffic planners estimate that around 25 to 30 percent of vehicles exiting the mall will shift to the new route, significantly reducing pressure on the existing road network.
Officials believe the project will improve traffic flow in the area, cut travel time for commuters, and help reduce fuel consumption caused by prolonged congestion.
Speaking on the occasion, Sunny Nimhan said traffic challenges cannot always be solved by constructing new roads alone. He emphasized that effective planning, traffic engineering, and coordination among stakeholders can often deliver practical and long-term solutions to urban mobility issues.
The project was implemented through coordinated efforts between the Pune Traffic Police, local representatives, and the management of Western Mall. Civic officials described the initiative as a forward-looking traffic management measure that is expected to provide lasting benefits to residents and daily commuters in the Aundh area.
