CID Expands Probe Into Pune Toxic Liquor Tragedy; Five Special Teams Formed, 20 More Suspects Under Watch
Pune, June 10, 2026: The Crime Investigation Department (CID) has intensified its investigation into the Pune toxic liquor tragedy that claimed more than 20 lives between May 26 and May 28. Officials have revealed that while 11 accused are currently in police custody, nearly 20 additional suspects are believed to be linked to the illegal liquor network and are being actively traced.
The investigation pertains to two cases registered on May 29 at Dapodi and Hadapsar police stations under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023, and the Maharashtra Prohibition Act. The cases involve deaths allegedly caused by the consumption of poisonous country-made liquor.
According to CID officials, the 11 arrested accused have been remanded to police custody until June 10. Investigators suspect the existence of a larger organised network involved in the manufacture, supply and distribution of illicit liquor. To accelerate the probe, the CID has constituted five special teams tasked with identifying and apprehending all those connected to the operation.
As part of the ongoing investigation, mobile phones and other electronic devices seized from the accused have been sent for forensic examination. Authorities are also analysing cloned digital data and scrutinising Call Detail Records (CDRs) and Internet Protocol Detail Records (IPDRs) to establish links between suspects and uncover the full extent of the network.
The CID has begun recording statements from witnesses and family members of the victims to gather additional evidence. Officials believe these statements could help identify key individuals involved in the supply chain and provide crucial leads in the case.
Appealing for public cooperation, the CID has urged citizens with any information related to the toxic liquor incident to come forward. Two help centres have been established to assist affected families and collect information. One centre is operating from the Dapodi Police Chowky on the Old Pune-Mumbai Road, while the second has been set up at the Pune Municipal Corporation’s Regional Office No. 4 near the Hadapsar vegetable market.
The investigation is being conducted under the supervision of senior CID officers, including Additional Director General of Police Sunil Ramanand, Special Inspector General of Police Sudhir Hiremath and Superintendent of Police Shafqat Amna. Deputy Superintendents of Police Sachin Chavan and Shamrao Kale are leading the on-ground investigation.
