Silent Call Scam: Unknown Number Disconnects After ‘Hello’? Here’s What It Could Mean
Cyber security experts have warned users about a growing ‘Silent Call Scam’, where repeated calls from unknown numbers disconnect immediately after the receiver answers.
A new cyber fraud technique known as the “Silent Call Scam” is raising concerns among mobile phone users. The scam typically begins with repeated calls from unknown numbers. However, as soon as the recipient answers the phone and says “Hello”, the call gets disconnected without any conversation.
According to information shared by Cyber Dost, an initiative working under the Ministry of Home Affairs’ Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C), these calls may not be harmless wrong numbers. Experts say fraudsters use automated systems to identify whether a mobile number is active and being used regularly. Once the recipient answers, the system records the number as active and disconnects the call automatically.
The real risk begins after the initial call. Cyber criminals may later target verified active numbers with phishing calls, fake customer care scams, investment frauds, OTP theft attempts, or other forms of digital fraud. In some cases, victims may also be subjected to repeated spam and scam calls after their numbers are identified as active.
Cyber experts have advised users not to ignore such incidents. If an unknown number repeatedly calls and disconnects immediately after being answered, users should remain cautious and avoid sharing any personal information if contacted again.
To stay safe, users are advised to block suspicious numbers, especially if the same number repeatedly places silent calls. They should also avoid calling back unknown numbers after such incidents, as this may confirm further engagement with the number.
Telecom operators and smartphone services increasingly flag suspicious callers as “Spam” or “Scam Likely”. Users should pay attention to these warnings and avoid answering calls that appear suspicious whenever possible.
People who receive repeated silent calls can also report the numbers through the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal’s complaint and reporting facilities. Reporting helps authorities track suspicious activity and identify emerging fraud patterns.
Cyber security experts warn that fraudsters constantly develop new methods to target users. Remaining cautious about unknown calls, messages and suspicious links remains one of the most effective ways to avoid becoming a victim of online fraud.
