Pune: FDA Suspends License Of SPPU’s Eight Messes After Students Find Worms, Insects In Food
Pune: Food services at all eight hostel messes and the central refectory at Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) have been temporarily suspended following an inspection by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) after students reported finding worms, insects and other contaminants in meals served on campus.
The FDA conducted an inspection of the university’s central refectory on Tuesday after receiving complaints regarding food quality and hygiene standards. Food Safety Officer Ajinkya Umap led the inspection and reviewed conditions at the facility.
Officials said a detailed inspection report will be submitted to the FDA’s Assistant Commissioner. The contractor responsible for operating the food facilities has been summoned for a hearing, following which the authorities will decide on further action.
Depending on the findings of the inquiry, the contractor could face measures ranging from corrective directives and monetary penalties to suspension of the food service licence.
The action comes after students repeatedly raised concerns over the quality of food served at the university’s dining facilities. Student groups had reportedly demanded immediate intervention and stricter monitoring of food safety standards on campus.
SPPU operates eight mess facilities along with a central refectory that cater to a large number of students residing and studying on campus. With food services currently halted, students are making alternative arrangements while awaiting a decision from the FDA.
University and FDA officials are expected to review the inspection findings and determine the next course of action to ensure compliance with food safety regulations and protect student health.
