Pune Gets First Major Pre-Monsoon Showers; NDA Records 81.5 mm Rainfall as Monsoon Nears City
Pune Receives Widespread Pre-Monsoon Rainfall, Monsoon Likely Within 48 Hours
Pune, June 21: After weeks of hot and humid weather, Pune finally witnessed widespread pre-monsoon showers on Sunday, bringing relief to residents across several parts of the city. The rainfall activity, accompanied by thunderclouds and gusty winds, is being viewed as a precursor to the arrival of the southwest monsoon over the region.
According to data from the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the highest rainfall on Sunday was recorded at the National Defence Academy (NDA), which received 78.5 mm of rain, making it the wettest location in the Pune region for the day.
Rainfall Recorded Across Pune
Rainfall measurements recorded till Sunday evening showed significant variation across the city:
- NDA: 81.5 mm
- Shivajinagar: 18.3 mm
- Hadapsar: 8.5 mm
- Pashan: 4 mm
- Lavale: 1.5 mm
- Lohegaon: 0.6 mm
- Chinchwad: No rainfall recorded
The showers provided temporary respite from the prolonged heat that had gripped Pune amid a delayed monsoon season.
IMD Predicts Monsoon Arrival Soon
Meteorologists have indicated that weather conditions are becoming increasingly favourable for the southwest monsoon to advance into Pune and adjoining areas.
According to IMD officials, strengthening monsoon winds and increased moisture inflow over Maharashtra have contributed to the development of thunderstorms and pre-monsoon rainfall activity across Pune district. Light to moderate rainfall is expected over the next few days as the monsoon progresses.
Cloudy Evenings, Thunderstorms Likely This Week
The weather department has forecast generally clear skies during the daytime, followed by cloudy conditions during the late afternoon and evening hours through the coming week. Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and light rainfall are likely in Pune and surrounding areas as monsoon conditions strengthen.
Temperatures Remain High Despite Rain
Despite the rainfall, daytime temperatures remained elevated across the city.
- Shivajinagar: 35.6°C
- Hadapsar: Around 34.5°C
- Chinchwad: Around 34.5°C
- Pashan: 33.8°C
- NDA: 33.8°C
Weather experts expect maximum temperatures to remain between 33°C and 36°C over the next few days, while minimum temperatures are likely to hover around 24°C. Lavale may experience cooler mornings with temperatures dropping to around 21°C.
Large Parts of Maharashtra Still Await Significant Rain
While Pune received welcome showers, several districts in Central Maharashtra continued to report little or no rainfall, highlighting the uneven progress of the monsoon across the state. The delayed monsoon has contributed to rainfall deficits and concerns over water availability in many regions.
