Pune, June 22, 2026: Pune city Congress corporators and party office-bearers staged a silent protest outside the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) premises on Monday, condemning the alleged assault on an elected corporator inside the PMC General Body Hall and calling for immediate action against those responsible.

In a statement issued during the protest, participants described the incident as not merely an attack on an individual representative but a serious assault on the fundamental values of democracy. They expressed concern that elected representatives raising public issues should feel unsafe within the municipal corporation’s own deliberative chamber.

The protesters emphasised that the PMC General Body Hall is a democratic platform meant for discussing public issues and finding solutions through debate and dialogue. They said the civic body’s highest decision-making forum should not become a place for intimidation, coercion, or mob behaviour.

According to the statement, such incidents risk eroding public trust in democratic institutions and undermine the principles of representative governance.

Although the demonstration was silent in nature, opposition leaders said it reflected their deep anger, pain, and determination to safeguard democratic values. Several opposition councillors and office-bearers participated in the protest.

The protesters demanded that the Mayor order an impartial inquiry into the incident, ensure strict action against those found guilty, and implement concrete measures to prevent similar occurrences in the future.

Raising the slogan, “Democracy, not mob rule, should prevail in the House,” the protesters asserted that every attempt to suppress the voice of the people would be challenged through democratic means.
