Pune, June 22, 2026: After enduring nearly two weeks of intense heat and soaring temperatures, Pune residents finally received much-needed relief on Sunday as heavy pre-monsoon showers lashed several parts of the city and surrounding areas. The rainfall brought down temperatures significantly but also caused waterlogging, flooding in residential societies, and disruptions to normal life.

The heaviest rainfall was recorded in the NDA area, which received 79 mm of rain by 5:30 pm, followed by Khadakwasla (57 mm) and Warje (25 mm). Roads in several localities were submerged, while water entered shops and housing societies, causing inconvenience to residents.

According to the Pune Meteorological Department, weather conditions over the next 24 hours are becoming increasingly favourable for the further advancement of the southwest monsoon, raising the possibility of its arrival in Pune soon. The department has also forecast widespread rainfall across the region during the coming week.

Rainfall Brings Relief from Scorching Heat

The city had been experiencing unusually high temperatures throughout June due to delayed monsoon activity. Pune’s maximum temperature had touched nearly 40 degrees Celsius earlier this month and remained around 37 degrees Celsius over the past week.

The sudden showers on Sunday brought a noticeable drop in temperature and created a pleasant atmosphere across the city.

Sudden Change in Weather

Since Sunday morning, Pune witnessed alternating spells of sunshine and cloudy conditions. By noon, dark clouds gathered over central Pune and suburban areas, leading to light showers. After a brief pause, the rain returned with thunder and gusty winds around 3 pm, intensifying into a heavy downpour that lasted for nearly an hour.

The rainfall flooded several major roads and affected movement across the city. As it was a weekend, many residents were out shopping and visiting markets when the sudden showers caught them off guard, forcing people to seek shelter.

Despite the inconvenience, many Punekars welcomed the rain, saying it was a welcome break from the oppressive summer heat.

Rainfall Recorded Till 5:30 PM

Rainfall recorded across Pune and nearby areas included:

  • NDA – 79 mm
  • Khadakwasla – 57 mm
  • Warje – 25 mm
  • Shivajinagar – 19 mm
  • Ambegaon-Katraj – 11 mm
  • Hadapsar – 9 mm
  • Deccan – 8 mm
  • Pashan – 4 mm

Light to moderate showers continued in several parts of the city even after sunset, indicating the strengthening of monsoon conditions over the region.

Meteorologists have advised residents to remain alert for heavy rainfall spells over the next few days as the monsoon is expected to advance further into Maharashtra.
