Pune: PMC To Remove BRT Corridors On Alandi Road, Nagar Road and Swargate-Katraj Stretch To Ease Traffic Congestion
Pune, June 23, 2026: In a major decision aimed at reducing traffic congestion, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has approved the removal of the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) corridor between Vishrantwadi Chowk and Phulenagar on Alandi Road. However, the ruling and opposition parties did not stop there and have collectively decided to phase out BRT services from other key city roads as well.
The decision was taken during the PMC General Body meeting, where a proposal to remove the BRT corridor on Alandi Road was placed for approval. Subsequently, PMC directed the administration to also dismantle the remaining BRT corridors on Nagar Road and the Swargate-Katraj stretch. Mayor Manjusha Nagpure instructed civic officials to complete the process within the next eight days.

The BRT project was originally introduced to strengthen Pune’s public transport system and was implemented in phases on Satara Road, Nagar Road, Hadapsar Road and Alandi Road. Over the years, a significant portion of the BRT corridor on Solapur Road has already been removed, while nearly half of the Nagar Road BRT stretch has also been dismantled.
Earlier, during a Standing Committee meeting, a decision was taken to remove the BRT corridor between Vishrantwadi Chowk and Phulenagar. The municipal administration had supported the move, stating that the removal would help reduce traffic congestion on Alandi Road and create two additional lanes for private vehicles.
Proposal Expanded During General Body Meeting
While discussing the proposal in the General Body meeting, Corporator Ajay Khedekar suggested that PMC should first seek the opinion of the PMPML Board of Directors before taking a final decision. However, civic leaders argued that the process would take additional time and proceeded with the decision, assuming that the board would eventually grant approval.
Leader of the House Ganesh Bidkar also pointed out that the BRT corridor between Swargate and Katraj would need to be removed due to ongoing Metro construction work. During the discussion, demands were also raised to eliminate the remaining BRT infrastructure on Nagar Road. As a result, leaders across party lines unanimously approved a supplementary proposal to remove BRT corridors from Alandi Road, Nagar Road, and the Swargate-Katraj route.
Speaking on the decision, Ganesh Bidkar said, “The General Body has approved the removal of BRT corridors on Alandi Road, Nagar Road and the Swargate-Katraj stretch. The roads will be widened before the Ashadhi Wari.”
Mayor Manjusha Nagpure stated, “The BRT corridor on Alandi Road creates obstacles during the Wari procession. Therefore, the administration has been directed to remove the corridor within the next eight days before the Ashadhi Wari.”
