FDA Commissioner Tukaram Mundhe Suspends Licences Of Six Hotels, Restaurants and Bakeries Over Food Safety Violations
Mumbai, June 30, 2026: Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Commissioner Tukaram Mundhe has launched a major crackdown on food establishments, suspending the licences of six prominent hotels, restaurants and bakeries in Mumbai for alleged violations of food safety and hygiene regulations.
Since taking charge as FDA Commissioner, Mundhe has initiated surprise inspections across the state. On Monday, the enforcement drive targeted several well-known food establishments, with authorities citing serious lapses in cleanliness, food handling and regulatory compliance. The action is being viewed as one of the most significant enforcement measures undertaken by the department in recent times.

Among the establishments facing action is Fleet and Varsha, a restaurant operated by Aditya Birla New Age Restaurants & Cafes Pvt. Ltd. at Nariman Point. During an inspection conducted on June 27, FDA officials allegedly detected instances of food misbranding. Following the inspection, the restaurant’s licence was suspended.
The other establishments against which action was taken include Hotel Gopalkrishna in Santacruz East, where rats were reportedly found inside the kitchen; Karak Enterprises in Andheri, where a severe cockroach infestation was allegedly detected in the kitchen and storage areas; Madras Diaries in Bandra, where officials claimed hygiene standards were not being followed; M.K. Bakery in Borivali, where food production was allegedly taking place amid renovation work, dust and debris, and where improperly labelled food items were seized; and Hotel Shrikrishna in Bhandup, where inspectors reported unhygienic refrigeration facilities and multiple sanitation deficiencies.
Officials said the licences of all six establishments were suspended due to serious violations of food safety norms that could potentially endanger public health. The FDA has reiterated that strict compliance with hygiene and food safety regulations is mandatory and warned that similar action will be taken against any establishment found compromising consumer safety.
Known for his strict administrative approach, Mundhe has stated that the department will not tolerate any practices that put public health at risk. The latest enforcement drive is expected to send a strong message to the hospitality industry, with authorities indicating that inspections and regulatory action will continue across Maharashtra.
