Pune Court Orders Police Protection For Elderly Couple After Alleged Abuse By Their Only Son
Pune, July 2, 2026: In a disturbing case of alleged elder abuse, a court in Pune has granted interim police protection to an elderly couple from the Warje area after they accused their only son of subjecting them to continuous physical, mental and financial harassment. The order came after a 58-year-old woman approached the court seeking protection under the Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act.
According to the complaint, the couple in mid 50s, identified as Devaram and Laxmi (names changed), had worked hard to educate their only son, Praneet (28), up to an engineering degree. However, despite completing his education, he allegedly failed to secure stable employment and later developed substance addiction.
The parents alleged that their son repeatedly demanded money from them and resorted to verbal abuse, threats and physical assault whenever they refused. Fearing for their safety, the elderly couple reportedly spent several days outside their home, taking shelter in temples, parks and other public places to avoid confrontation.
The complaint further alleged that the son used one-time passwords (OTPs) from his parents’ mobile phones to fraudulently obtain online loans in their names. Following these incidents, the mother through advocate Kamlesh Divekar, filed a petition under the Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act seeking legal protection.
Judicial Magistrate First Class P. B. Patil accepted the petition and directed the Warje Malwadi Police to provide immediate protection to the couple. The court also ordered that the son must not demand money from his parents or subject them to any form of physical or mental harassment.
Advocate Divekar stated that any violation of the court’s order could lead to the son’s immediate arrest under the provisions of the Domestic Violence Act. He also clarified that the law extends beyond disputes between spouses and provides protection to women facing abuse from any person residing in the same household.
