Heavy Rainfall Expected to Continue in Pune; Stay Indoors Unless Travel Is Essential
Pune, July 5: Pune and its surrounding regions witnessed continuous heavy rainfall on Sunday, with weather conditions indicating that the city is likely to experience a long rainy night. Rain bands moving in from the western side are expected to bring more heavy spells over the next 24 hours, while the ghat sections could receive extremely heavy rainfall exceeding 200 mm.
According to rainfall data recorded over the past 24 hours, several locations in the Western Ghats received intense rainfall. Dongerwadi recorded 398 mm of rain, Tamhini received 310 mm, Davdi 268 mm, Lonavala 263 mm, and Mulshi 117 mm. Tamhini has also crossed the 1,000 mm seasonal rainfall mark.
The ongoing downpour has significantly reduced visibility on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway to nearly 200 metres in several stretches. Motorists have been advised to exercise extreme caution as water accumulation on the road, particularly on cemented sections, has increased the risk of hydroplaning.
The heavy rainfall also led to tree collapse incidents at multiple locations across Pune, disrupting traffic and causing inconvenience to commuters. No major injuries have been reported so far.
Meanwhile, the weather department has issued an Orange and Red Alert for Pune, Mumbai, Thane, Raigad, Palghar, Nashik and several other districts, warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall over the next 24 hours.
Citizens have been advised to stay indoors unless travel is absolutely necessary, follow official weather updates, avoid flooded areas, and cooperate with local authorities as the intense monsoon activity is expected to continue.
