IMD Issues Red Alert For Maharashtra: Next 48 Hours Critical For Mumbai, Pune And Konkan As Extremely Heavy Rainfall Expected
Pune, July 6, 2026: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a Red Alert warning for extremely heavy rainfall across several parts of Maharashtra, with the next 48 hours expected to be particularly critical for the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, Konkan coast, and the ghat areas of Pune.
The alert comes after widespread heavy rainfall since the beginning of July, following a prolonged dry spell in June. Continuous downpours have triggered landslides in multiple regions, while precautionary school closures have been implemented in several districts.

IMD weather forecasting head Dr. S. D. Sanap said the Konkan coastline and Western Ghats have already been experiencing heavy to extremely heavy rainfall over the past 24–48 hours, and similar intense conditions are likely to persist for the next two days.
He added that strong cloud formation continues over the ghat regions of Mumbai and Pune, while a low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal has contributed to the ongoing widespread rainfall activity across the state.
According to IMD, Red Alerts have been issued for Mumbai, Thane, Raigad, and the ghat regions of Pune. The alert will remain in place for the ghat areas through Tuesday, while Yellow Alerts have been issued for other parts of Maharashtra.

He also noted that Maharashtra had recorded a rainfall deficit of nearly 47% in June, but the recent spell of heavy rain over the past few days has significantly improved the situation, reducing the deficit to around 15%.
Authorities have urged citizens to avoid unnecessary travel in areas under Red and Yellow Alerts due to risks of landslides, flooding, and other rain-related hazards, and to stay updated with official weather advisories as heavy rainfall is expected to continue over the next 48 hours.
