Maharashtra Assembly Passes Dance Bar Amendment Bill, Brings Orchestra Bars Under Stricter Law
Mumbai, July 8, 2026: The Maharashtra Legislative Assembly on Tuesday passed the Dance Bar Amendment Bill, a significant move aimed at curbing illegal dance bar operations allegedly functioning under the guise of orchestra bars.
The amendment brings orchestra performances within the ambit of the state’s anti-dance bar legislation, closing what the government described as a legal loophole that had allowed some establishments to operate dance bars despite restrictions.
Until now, orchestra performances in bars were permitted under licences issued under the Maharashtra Police Act. However, the Home Department said it had received several complaints alleging that many bars were misusing these permissions to conduct dance bar activities under the cover of orchestra performances.
To address the issue, the state government has proposed amendments to two key laws:
- The Maharashtra Police Act.
- The Maharashtra Prohibition of Obscene Dance in Hotels, Restaurants and Bar Rooms and Protection of Dignity of Women Act, 2016.
Once the amendment bill receives approval from the Legislative Council and the Governor’s assent, the revised law will come into force across Maharashtra.
According to the government, the move is intended to prevent the exploitation of women, safeguard their dignity, and strengthen enforcement against establishments violating the law by promoting obscene dance performances under the guise of orchestra shows.
Officials said bar owners found misusing orchestra licences to run dance bars or violating the provisions of the amended law will face stringent legal action under the anti-dance bar legislation.
The state government believes the amendment will significantly curb the operation of illegal dance bars and strengthen regulation of bars across Maharashtra by eliminating the misuse of orchestra permits.
