July 10: If you are still holding ₹2,000 currency notes, there is no need to panic. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has clarified that these notes remain exchangeable through designated RBI offices, even though they have been withdrawn from circulation.

The clarification comes as many people continue to possess ₹2,000 notes and are uncertain about whether they can still exchange or deposit them.

Why Were ₹2,000 Notes Introduced?

The ₹2,000 denomination was introduced in 2016 after the Central Government announced the demonetisation of old ₹500 and ₹1,000 currency notes. The high-value note was brought into circulation to address the temporary shortage of cash following demonetisation.

However, the RBI later stopped printing ₹2,000 notes, and in May 2023, announced their withdrawal from circulation as part of its currency management policy. While the notes are no longer issued for regular transactions, they continue to remain legal tender.

How Can You Exchange ₹2,000 Notes?

According to the RBI, individuals can still exchange or deposit ₹2,000 notes by visiting any of the 19 RBI Issue Offices across the country.

Those who are unable to visit an RBI office in person can also send the notes through India Post to any of the designated RBI Issue Offices. After verification, the equivalent amount will be credited directly to the sender’s bank account.

RBI Advises Citizens Not to Panic

The central bank has urged people not to worry if they still possess ₹2,000 notes. It has advised citizens to use only the official RBI channels for exchanging the currency and to avoid misinformation circulating on social media.

For detailed guidelines, citizens can visit the RBI’s official website or contact the nearest RBI Issue Office.

Note: The RBI has not announced any reward, lottery, bonus or special financial benefit for people holding ₹2,000 notes. Any such claims circulating online are false. The latest update only confirms that the notes can still be exchanged through the prescribed process.
