Pune: PCMC Commissioner Orders Notices To Environment Department And Contractor Over Moshi Garbage Depot Tragedy
Pimpri, July 13, 2026: Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) Commissioner Dr. Vijay Suryawanshi has directed officials to issue notices to the civic body’s Environment Department and the contractor, Antony Lara Renewable, in connection with the fatal Moshi Garbage Depot accident.
The directive was issued during a high-level review meeting chaired by the Commissioner on Sunday to assess the circumstances surrounding the July 8 tragedy. Additional Commissioners Kuldeep Jangam, Tripti Sandbhor and Vikrant Bagade, Joint Commissioner Manoj Lonkar, and senior officials from various departments attended the meeting.
The accident occurred at around 1.30 pm on July 8, when a massive mound of garbage collapsed onto the administrative building of the Waste-to-Energy Project at the Moshi Garbage Depot.
According to PCMC, 23 people were trapped in the incident, including 22 inside the administrative building and one person beneath the garbage heap outside. Five people managed to escape safely from the building immediately after the collapse.
A large-scale rescue operation involving the Indian Army, National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), PCMC, PMRDA Fire Department, and the Police was launched to rescue those trapped. Rescue teams successfully pulled nine people out alive, while nine others trapped inside the building lost their lives in the incident.
Following the tragedy, Commissioner Dr. Suryawanshi ordered a detailed inquiry into the incident. As part of the investigation, he instructed senior officials to immediately issue notices to the PCMC Environment Department and Antony Lara Renewable, the contractor associated with the project, seeking explanations regarding the circumstances that led to the accident.
