From coffee companions and shopping buddies to movie partners, the concept of hiring someone for temporary companionship is gaining visibility online. While supporters call it a social support service, experts urge users to prioritise safety, transparency and legal awareness.

Pune: A concept once associated mainly with Japan is increasingly appearing on Indian social media platforms. Known as the “rent-a-boyfriend” trend, the service allows people to hire a companion for a few hours to join them for activities such as shopping, watching a movie, attending an event, visiting a café or accompanying them to a hospital appointment.

Unlike dating or matchmaking services, these platforms generally market themselves as paid companionship or social support services. Profiles advertising “movie partners”, “shopping buddies”, “travel companions” and “event companions” are now visible on Facebook groups, Instagram pages and some online marketplaces.

From Japan To India

The concept traces its origins to Japan’s “rental person” industry, which emerged in the 1990s. Initially, people could hire companions to attend weddings, family functions or simply provide conversation and emotional support.

Over time, specialised services such as rental girlfriends and rental boyfriends became popular, particularly in large cities where loneliness, demanding work schedules and solo living had become increasingly common.

Social media and influencer content later introduced the idea to a global audience, with creators documenting their experiences of booking companionship services in Japan.

How The Service Works

Most platforms allow users to browse profiles, select a companion based on interests, availability and location, and book them for a fixed duration.

Depending on the platform, services may include:

  • Coffee meet-ups
  • Shopping assistance
  • Movie outings
  • Event companions
  • Restaurant visits
  • City tours
  • Hospital or medical support visits
  • Conversation and emotional companionship

Pricing varies widely. Some Indian platforms advertise hourly rates beginning around ₹1,500 and increasing depending on the activity, duration and location.

Not Marketed As Dating Or Sexual Services

Most organised companionship platforms clearly state that they are not escort services. Their policies generally prohibit:

  • Physical intimacy or sexual services
  • Hotel meetings
  • Overnight stays
  • Visits to isolated locations
  • Harassment or abusive behaviour

Meetings are usually expected to take place in public locations such as cafés, malls, parks or restaurants.

Why Is The Trend Growing?

Experts believe several social changes are contributing to the popularity of paid companionship services:

  • Growing urban loneliness
  • More people living away from family
  • Busy work schedules
  • Delayed marriages
  • Smaller social circles in metropolitan cities
  • Rising acceptance of gig-economy services

For some users, hiring a companion may simply provide company during an event or reduce the discomfort of attending social occasions alone.

A New Gig-Economy Opportunity

For those offering companionship services, it can become an additional source of income.

Unlike traditional freelance work, the role requires strong communication skills, punctuality, emotional intelligence, professionalism and the ability to maintain clear personal boundaries.

Several online listings describe companionship as a professional service rather than a romantic relationship.

Experts Urge Caution

Despite its growing visibility, India’s companionship-for-hire market remains largely fragmented and is not governed by a dedicated regulatory framework.

Consumer rights experts say users should carefully verify any platform before making payments or sharing personal information. Since many listings operate through social media rather than established businesses, there is a greater risk of impersonation, scams and misuse.

Psychologists also note that while temporary companionship may help reduce feelings of loneliness for some people, it should not replace genuine emotional support from trusted family members, friends or mental health professionals when deeper emotional issues are involved.

Safety Tips Before Booking A Companion

Anyone considering such services should keep these precautions in mind:

  • Verify the platform’s authenticity and read user reviews.
  • Meet only in busy public places.
  • Inform a trusted family member or friend about your plans and share your live location.
  • Avoid making advance payments to unverified individuals.
  • Never share financial details, passwords or sensitive personal information.
  • Do not agree to last-minute venue changes to isolated locations.
  • Trust your instincts and leave immediately if you feel unsafe.
  • Use secure digital payment methods that provide transaction records.
  • Check whether the platform has identity verification, customer support and complaint mechanisms.

Know The Legal And Privacy Risks

Since the sector is still evolving, users should understand that terms, responsibilities and dispute resolution may differ from one platform to another.

Experts recommend reading the platform’s terms of service carefully, especially regarding cancellations, refunds, identity verification and privacy policies. Sharing photographs or videos without consent, impersonation, harassment or financial fraud may attract legal consequences under applicable Indian laws.

While companionship services themselves may not be illegal if conducted lawfully, any activity involving coercion, exploitation, trafficking, solicitation or other criminal offences remains punishable under Indian law.
