IMD Predicts Return of Heavy Rainfall; Here's When Maharashtra Can Expect It
Maharashtra, July 17: After a brief lull in rainfall, the southwest monsoon is expected to regain momentum across Maharashtra over the coming days, bringing much-needed relief to farmers and easing concerns over declining water levels in reservoirs.
According to weather forecasts, rainfall activity is likely to increase over the next 24 to 48 hours, with Yellow Alerts issued for 13 districts in parts of Vidarbha, Marathwada, and western Maharashtra.

Rainfall Activity Expected to Increase
Several parts of Maharashtra have witnessed below-normal rainfall over the past few days, raising concerns among farmers about crop sowing and water availability. While isolated showers were recorded in parts of Marathwada, Vidarbha, western Maharashtra, and the Konkan region, widespread heavy rainfall has remained absent.
The reduced rainfall has also impacted reservoir levels in some regions, increasing worries about irrigation and drinking water supplies.
Meteorologists now expect atmospheric conditions to become more favourable for monsoon activity as moisture levels increase across the state.
Heavy Rain Forecast After July 22
Weather experts indicate that rainfall intensity is likely to increase significantly after July 22, with widespread showers expected across Maharashtra during the final week of July.
Forecast models suggest that the period between July 20 and July 30 could witness enhanced monsoon activity, with several regions likely to receive moderate to heavy rainfall.
If current weather patterns continue, many parts of the state could record substantial rainfall by the end of July.
Weather Systems Supporting Monsoon Revival
Meteorologists attribute the expected revival of the monsoon to the development of a low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal, a key driver of rainfall over central and western India.
In addition, the Boreal Summer Intra-Seasonal Oscillation (BSISO)—a climate pattern that influences monsoon activity—has reportedly entered a favourable phase, creating conditions conducive to increased rainfall across the country.
The interaction of these weather systems is expected to strengthen monsoon currents over Maharashtra and several other parts of India.
Heavy Rain Likely in Northern India Too
Apart from Maharashtra, weather forecasts indicate that rainfall activity will intensify across northern India over the coming days.
States including Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Delhi, Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, and Himachal Pradesh are expected to receive moderate to heavy rainfall. Authorities have also warned of the possibility of landslides, flash floods, and cloudburst-like events in hilly regions such as Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand.
Travellers planning to visit these areas are advised to monitor weather updates and follow official advisories before undertaking their journey.
