A 24-year-old tourist from Karnataka sustained critical injuries after falling nearly 30 to 40 feet during a zipline ride at a private resort in Dandeli, Uttara Kannada district. The incident, which occurred on July 3, has gone viral on social media and renewed concerns over safety measures at adventure tourism facilities.

The victim, identified as Kubera Surapura, also referred to as Kuber Surpur, is a resident of Vijayapura. According to his family, the safety lock attached to the zipline allegedly failed while he was suspended mid-air, causing him to plunge to the ground.
Kuber suffered multiple fractures in his arms and legs, along with severe nerve damage. He was initially taken to the Dandeli Government Hospital before being shifted to a hospital in Vijayapura. As his condition required specialised treatment, he was later moved to Miraj, where he has undergone multiple surgeries and continues to receive medical care.
The victim’s family has accused the resort management of negligence, alleging that the zipline equipment appeared rusted and was not properly maintained. They have demanded accountability, claiming the accident could have been prevented through regular maintenance and proper safety inspections.
The video of the incident has prompted widespread discussion on social media, with many users calling for stricter regulation and periodic inspection of adventure sports facilities across the country.
One user wrote, “This is a horrible zipline design. The belts should be stuck to his body such that he doesn’t fall even if he leaves the rope. How was something like this even approved?!”
Another commented, “Let me guess. Some petty fine. A few weeks of shutdown and the resort is good to go. No justice.”
Sterling River Resort has, however, denied the allegations of negligence. In its response, the resort described the incident as an unfortunate mishap and maintained that all prescribed safety protocols were in place at the time of the accident.
The incident has highlighted the importance of stringent safety checks and proper maintenance of equipment used in adventure tourism, with many calling for stronger oversight to prevent similar accidents in the future.
Disclaimer: The family’s allegations of negligence are yet to be established through official investigation. The resort has denied any lapse and stated that all required safety protocols were followed.
