Maharashtra Bandh Called On July 23. Know Why
Pune, July 22, 2026: The Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi (VBA) has announced a statewide Maharashtra Bandh on Thursday, July 23, protesting the alleged police action against students during a demonstration in the national capital.
VBA National President Prakash Ambedkar appealed to political parties, student organisations, social groups, and citizens across the state to support the bandh. He said the protest is intended to oppose the alleged use of force against students and uphold the constitutional right to peaceful protest.
The party stated that the bandh is a symbolic expression of solidarity with the students and a call to protect democratic values and civil liberties. VBA leaders have urged people from all sections of society to participate peacefully in the statewide protest.
State spokesperson Rajendra Patode criticised the alleged police action and accused the authorities of suppressing democratic voices. He called upon students, youth, and citizens committed to constitutional principles to join the movement being organised across Maharashtra.
The controversy has also echoed in Parliament, where opposition parties staged protests over the incident. Several senior opposition leaders, including Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, and Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav, were reportedly detained by police during demonstrations in Delhi.
At present, the Maharashtra Bandh has been announced only by the Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi. No official confirmation has been issued by other major political parties regarding their participation or support for the statewide shutdown.
