Pune Water Supply: No Water Cuts in City, Announces Pune Mayor
Pune: Pune residents can breathe a sigh of relief as the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has decided not to impose water cuts, following a significant rise in water storage levels across the dams supplying the city. The announcement was made by Mayor Manjusha Nagpure.
Heavy rainfall during July has substantially increased water levels in the Khadakwasla dam project. In the first week of July, the four dams supplying Pune had around 50% water storage. Although the reserves were relatively low at the time, PMC chose not to enforce water cuts as water was being released from Khadakwasla into the canal system.
A review of the city’s water supply situation was conducted on July 22, assessing available water storage, supply operations, and the distribution network. Officials found that the city is receiving an adequate and regular water supply, prompting the decision to continue normal distribution without restrictions.
As of July 22, the Khadakwasla dam project holds 20.16 TMC of water, equivalent to 69.17% of its total capacity. With rainfall continuing in the dam catchment areas, authorities expect storage levels to rise further.
Mayor Nagpure also urged citizens not to believe rumours claiming that water cuts would be reintroduced from today. She assured residents that the Water Supply Department is maintaining planned distribution across all parts of the city and that any technical issues are being addressed promptly.
While there will be no water cuts, citizens have been requested to use water responsibly and avoid unnecessary wastage.
