3 Things About Indian Family Life That Surprised This Italian Woman After Marriage
27 July, 2026:Â An Italian woman has caught the attention of social media users after sharing some of the everyday cultural differences she experienced after marrying into an Indian family. From the constant insistence on food to the way guests are treated, her observations have sparked conversations among people from multicultural families.
Chrissy Varughese shared her experiences in an Instagram video about three things that surprised her after becoming part of her husband’s Indian family. She explained that although she grew up in an Italian household and was familiar with big meals and expressive families, some aspects of Indian family life still took her by surprise.

The first thing she noticed was the importance placed on feeding guests and family members. Varughese said that being hungry hardly seemed to be an option, as more food would often appear on her plate even after she had eaten enough.
While Indian hospitality and the tradition of generously feeding guests are widely recognised, she said experiencing it as part of the family was different. Even saying that she was full did not necessarily stop another serving from arriving.
Her second surprise involved what happens when guests visit. Varughese said that in her Italian family, people would often help out in the kitchen when guests were around. In her husband’s family, however, she found that guests were generally encouraged to sit, relax and enjoy themselves rather than help with kitchen work.
The third cultural difference she highlighted was the direct way family members sometimes communicate. She recalled receiving straightforward opinions about things such as her eyebrows or whether a particular choli looked good with her lehenga.
Initially, Varughese said she sometimes wondered whether such direct comments meant someone was upset with her. Over time, however, she came to understand that this could simply be part of ordinary family conversations.
In the caption accompanying her video, she clarified that her observations were based on her personal experience with her husband’s family and were not meant to represent every Indian household.
She also described learning about another family culture as one of her favourite aspects of marriage, while continuing to bring elements of her own Italian upbringing into their lives. For her, the differences have offered an opportunity to understand another culture rather than judge one as better or worse.
The video resonated with social media users, with several people sharing similar stories about Indian families. Some joked about the difficulty of refusing another serving of food, while others related to the direct communication style within families.
Her light-hearted observations have since prompted a wider discussion about how seemingly small habits from serving food to interacting with guests can become some of the most memorable parts of adjusting to life in a multicultural family.
