Pune: Wall Painting During Rains Draws Flak As Basic Civic Problems Persist In Mukund Nagar, Maharshi Nagar
Pune, July 27, 2026: Residents of Ward No. 21, comprising Mukund Nagar, Salisbury Park, Maharshi Nagar and Market Yard, have alleged that civic funds are being wasted on cosmetic wall painting projects instead of addressing long-pending civic issues such as damaged roads, drainage problems and contaminated water supply.
According to residents, while people continue to struggle with pothole-ridden roads, clogged sewer lines and irregular water quality, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has undertaken wall painting work during the peak monsoon season in areas under the Bibwewadi Regional Office, sparking widespread criticism.
Locals claim that instead of prioritising essential infrastructure works such as road repairs, waste management, drainage upgrades and footpath maintenance, public representatives are focusing on painting public walls with plaques displaying their names and acknowledgements. Residents allege that the exercise is aimed at promoting political visibility rather than improving civic infrastructure.
The wall painting work is currently underway on the road connecting Maharshi Nagar to Market Yard, behind Adinath Society. Residents pointed out that the work is being carried out despite continuous heavy rainfall, raising concerns over its quality and necessity.
With rainwater washing away freshly applied paint onto the roads, locals have described the work as substandard and questioned the lack of oversight by PMC officials. They alleged that the project demonstrates poor planning and misuse of public money, as such painting work is unlikely to withstand monsoon conditions.
Residents have expressed anger that while basic services remain neglected, lakhs of rupees from the municipal treasury are reportedly being spent on projects that offer little public benefit.
They have demanded an immediate inquiry into the quality and execution of the work, action against the contractor and responsible officials if irregularities are found, and urged the PMC to prioritise resolving critical civic issues affecting the area.
