Pune, Jun 24 : The Crime Branch of city police on Saturday arrested sharp-shooter Shreyash Mate ( 21) from Bangalore in connection with alleged attempt to murder a city-based journalist, following the arrest of six people in this connection.
A team of Pune Crime Branch arrested Mate this morning from Bangalore and brought here for allegedly attempting to murder Harshad Kataria, a city-based journalist who worked for a Marathi daily, deputy commissioner of police (Crime) Amol Zende said. Further details will come to light only after getting his custody, he informed.
Smartana Patil, DCP zone 2, had told reporters yesterday (Friday) that first attempt was made on Kataria on May 27, when perpetrators attacked him with a sickle, but he managed to escape from spot. Another attempt was made on June 11, when two unidentified men on a motorbike approached the journalist and opened fire at him when he was on his two-wheeler, however, this attempt was also failed.
Following which, Kataria filed a complaint at Swargate police station and acting on this, police arrested six suspects two days back, official said.
Police seized a country-made pistol, one live cartridge, three sickles, three motercycles, smart mobile phones and Rs 2.25 lakh in cash from their possession.
Preliminary investigation so far has revealed that the cause of attack on the journalist was said to be a property dispute. Unidentified person had allegedly given a contract to eliminate journalist for trying to expose the matter, sources added.
