Swiggy has released its annual food delivery report ‘How India Swiggy’d in 2023’ as 2023 comes to an end. It offers insights into Indian dining habits, and the most popular dish ordered through the platform is still Biryani.
However, the Mumbai resident’s story is what will likely cause you to read the aforementioned statement twice. According to Swiggy’s report, a user from Mumbai placed food orders worth Rs 42.3 lakh.
Further, the astounding statistics in the report demonstrated how much Indians love Biryani. Throughout the year, people ordered 2.5 servings of biryani per second, which is an incredible rate. Swiggy’s top-charting dish has been biryani for a while, and 2023 was no different as it won the title for the eighth consecutive year.
A food enthusiast from Hyderabad has become a notable fan of biryani, having placed 1,633 orders in a year, or more than four plates a day on average.
Although chicken biryani remained a popular dish, vegetarians became more prevalent, with one vegetarian biryani being ordered for every 5.5 chicken biryanis. During the intense India vs. Pakistan cricket match, the popularity of biryani peaked when a Chandigarh family ordered 70 plates at once.
Another notable order was placed by a resident of Jhansi, who placed an astounding 269 items in a single day. In the meantime, a family in Bhubaneshwar decided to have a pizza feast, placing an astounding order of 207 pizzas, demonstrating the country’s love for the cheesy treat.
These records, along with the fact that Bengaluru was named the ‘Cake Capita’” due to its 8.5 million chocolate cake orders and that on Valentine’s Day, 271 cakes were ordered nationwide, represent the rich and varied culinary traditions of India.
