Karul Ghat Closure : Roadwork Brings Traffic Diversions in Talere-Kolhapur Sindhudurg Region
In a crucial development for commuters, the Karul Ghat Marg is anticipated to face closure starting Monday, and it might remain inaccessible for an extended duration upto 31st March. This closure is attributed to the ongoing concreting work on the Talere-Kolhapur Highway, particularly focusing on the first and second phases of the project.
The concrete work on the Talere-Kolhapur Highway commenced with the allocation of Rs 171 crore in the initial phase, covering an 18 km stretch from Kale to Kolhapur. Following the successful implementation of the first phase, the second phase, encompassing a 21 km road on the Talere-Gaganbawda route, received approval in January 2023. Notably, this road section is divided between Sindhudurg district (16 km) and Gaganbawda taluka (5 km).
As part of the broader highway enhancement project, Karul Ghat Road is undergoing a significant transformation, with a plan to convert nine and a half kilometers of it into a concrete road, boasting a width of 10 meters. An impressive 80 percent of the widening work at the narrow spots in the ghat region has already been accomplished within a month. The upcoming phase involves the construction of culverts in Ghats, a critical step requiring the closure of the highway.
To facilitate the closure and undertake necessary construction activities, the highway authority has sought permission from the district collector. Although expectations were set for permission to be granted in the first week of December, it was delayed, with reasons attributed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit. Subsequently, the authority reapplied for permission, supported by a police department report.
Given the nature of the construction work, which includes excavation of embankments and various other activities essential for pier construction, the highway authority finds it imperative to temporarily close Karul Ghat. The timeline for the closure and reopening will be finalized upon securing the necessary permissions, which are anticipated to be granted by Monday or Tuesday.
During the closure period, alternative routes will be implemented to manage the traffic flow efficiently. Heavy traffic originally routed through Karul Ghat Marg will be redirected via Phonda and Anusukara Ghat, ensuring that passengers face minimal disruptions. Importantly, only passenger traffic will be allowed through Bhuibawda Ghat, presenting a strategic approach to mitigating inconveniences caused by the closure.
As this substantial infrastructure development unfolds, the region is poised for enhanced connectivity, improved road conditions, and a more sustainable transportation network. The concreting of Karul Ghat Road aligns with broader efforts to modernize and fortify the transportation infrastructure in the Talere-Kolhapur region.
