In Pune district, the Lok Sabha election buzz is heating up with 35 candidates contesting in Pune constituency, 38 in Baramati, 33 in Maval, and 32 in Shirur. To accommodate the large candidate count, each constituency will deploy three electronic voting machine (EVM) ballot units.
Each EVM can handle up to 64 candidates, including NOTA (None of the Above), with provision for 16 candidates per unit.
If the count surpasses 16, additional units are linked. With the tally ranging between 30 to 40 candidates per constituency, the Election Commission has been asked for an extra 4,500 ballot units.
Baramati gears up for voting on May 7, while the other three constituencies follow on May 13. Suhas Diwase, Pune’s collector and district election officer, highlighted a surge of 2.11 lakh voters in the supplementary list, totaling to 83.38 lakh voters district-wide.
In Shirur, where 32 candidates vie for the seat, a third EVM unit is needed to include the NOTA option. Additionally, 1,675 individuals applied for the home voting facility, with Pune constituency topping the list, trailed by Baramati, Shirur, and Maval.
The district election officials anticipate longer counting times due to the increased number of candidates and EVMs.
