Pune is forecasted to experience moderate to heavy rainfall along with thunderstorms until May 24, according to India Meteorological Department (IMD). Gusty winds are also expected to accompany the rainfall, with speeds reaching 40 to 50 km/h on a few days.

Over the next few days, Pune’s daytime temperatures are projected to remain between 38 and 39 degrees Celsius. Recent rainfall data shows Shivaji Nagar and Lohegaon recorded 2.1 mm and 1.7 mm of rain, respectively, in the evenings. However, Sunday saw clear skies in the morning.

A senior IMD official explained, “A cyclonic circulation over Madhya Maharashtra, including Pune district, is causing moisture incursion in the region. This, combined with hot afternoon conditions, leads to the formation of local weather systems, resulting in evening thunderstorms and lightning.”

The official added that these weather conditions will persist for the next few days, with some areas within the city and district experiencing gusty winds.

In addition, the IMD reported that the southwest monsoon is advancing into the Nicobar Islands, the South Andaman Sea, parts of Maldives, the Comorin area, and the South Bay of Bengal. The monsoon is expected to reach Kerala by May 31.

“India’s seasonal rainfall is expected to be 106% of the Long Period Average (880mm for the 1971-2020 average),” said another senior IMD official. “Last year, the monsoon reached Kerala coast on June 8, a week late. This year, it is on track to arrive at the normal time.”
