Pune Police, PMC, and Google Join Forces To Enhance Traffic Flow and Safety On 32 Key Roads

In an effort to alleviate traffic congestion and reduce travel time for Pune’s citizens, an innovative traffic management scheme will be implemented starting August 1 on 32 main roads, which are critical traffic arteries in the city.

The project, a collaboration between the Pune Police, Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC), and Google, aims to enhance traffic flow and safety on these main roads.

Key improvements include:

• Chowk(Square) Enhancement: Upgrading major intersections to streamline traffic flow.
• Parking Management: Implementing better parking solutions to reduce road blockage.
• Traffic Control Devices: Installing advanced traffic signal systems and control devices.
• Traffic Separation Techniques: Introducing measures to separate different types of traffic, reducing congestion.

A mobile application, developed in coordination with the Traffic Branch of Pune Police and PMC, will facilitate these improvements, helping to reduce travel time and increase the carrying capacity of roads in Pune city.

The initiative will be carried out under the guidance of Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar and Additional Police Commissioner (East Region) Manoj Patil. The project will classify Pune’s roads according to their use and implement special measures in collaboration with local authorities.

Selected Main Roads:

The 32 main roads selected for the project are those with the highest traffic in the city. The total stretch together being 207Kms. Enhancements on these roads will include:

• Updated Signal Systems: Modernizing traffic signals to improve efficiency.
• Parking Management: Better regulation and planning of parking spaces.
• Speed Breakers and Road Surfacing: Ensuring smooth and safe driving conditions.
• Removal of Road Encroachments: Clearing unauthorized structures that hinder traffic.
• Traffic Control Devices: Implementing new traffic management tools.

Additional measures include completing missing road links, repairing damaged sections, enforcing no-hawker zones, resolving pending court cases related to roads, and addressing obstructions caused by trees and establishments.

By focusing on these main roads and increasing their carriage width, the project aims to:

• Boost Traffic Speed and Road Capacity: Encourage motorists to use main roads, reducing pressure on internal residential, commercial, and collector streets.
• Maintain Average Speed: Optimizing traffic speed to ensure maximum road capacity.

Mobile App Development:

The PMC and Pune Traffic Police will jointly develop a mobile app to coordinate square and main road improvements. This app will allow citizens to:

• – Register area-specific problems.
• – View solutions and make suggestions for traffic improvements.

Special Agreement with Google:

Pune city traffic police have entered a special agreement with Google to gather and analyze information about:

• – Parking systems.
• – Traffic congestion.
• – Changes in traffic patterns.
• – Locations of bus stops, auto stands, and PMPML stops.

Accident Reduction Measures:

Additional CP Patil emphasized that these measures aim to reduce the number of accidents in the city. The project will classify accident causes into human and engineering errors, and coordinate with the Save Life Foundation to analyze the time taken for the injured to receive treatment, further aiming to minimize accident rates.
