WhatsApp aims to enhance file sharing with a new feature that allows users to transfer files without an internet connection, akin to Apple’s AirDrop.

WhatsApp is developing a new feature that will enable users to share files without the need for an internet connection. This upcoming feature,  known as “Nearby Share,” is designed to facilitate easy sharing of documents, photos, videos and other files with nearby devices.

Initially announced for Android users, the feature is also set to be available for iOS users in the near future. However, it has not yet been rolled out for either platform. WhatsApp is currently testing this feature in its beta phase for both Android and iOS.

The WABetaInfo report includes a screenshot from the beta testing application, displaying a scanner on the screen that assists in sharing files. This method differs between platforms: while the Android version uses nearby device detection technology, the iOS version requires users to scan a QR code to initiate the file transfer.

The ability to share files without an internet connection significantly enhances the file transfer experience, especially for large files such as high-quality photos, videos and documents. This is particularly beneficial in areas with poor or unreliable internet connectivity, providing a reliable alternative for file sharing.

Furthermore, the feature is expected to be compatible across different platforms, including Android and iOS, allowing seamless file sharing regardless of the device type. It will also support end-to-end encryption, ensuring that only the intended recipients can access the shared content.

It’s important to note that this feature is still in the early stages of development, and the final version may undergo substantial changes. There is a possibility that the iOS version will eventually adopt a similar approach to the Android version, using nearby device detection technology instead of QR code scanning.

WhatsApp continues to innovate and enhance its user experience and the introduction of the “Nearby Share” feature is a testament to its commitment to improving file-sharing capabilities for its users.
