The history of Kargil Vijay Diwas dates back to a series of conflicts between India and Pakistan, including the war in early 1971 that led to the formation of Bangladesh. Post-1971, the two countries continued to clash, including battles for control over the Siachen Glacier. The animosity peaked with both nations testing their nuclear weapons in 1998.
To maintain peace and stability, India and Pakistan signed the Lahore Declaration in February 1999, aiming for a bilateral resolution of the Kashmir issue. However, Pakistani soldiers and militants infiltrated the Indian side of the Line of Control (LoC) in the northern Kargil district, occupying strategic high-altitude positions to disrupt the link between Kashmir and Ladakh.
The infiltration was discovered in May 1999, prompting the Indian Army to launch Operation Vijay, leading to the Kargil War. The conflict lasted from May to July 1999, with intense battles fought in challenging mountainous terrain. The Indian Army managed to drive out the intruders and recapture key positions such as Tiger Hill.
The war ended on July 26, 1999, with nearly 490 Indian officers, soldiers, and jawans losing their lives. To honor their bravery and sacrifice, Kargil Vijay Diwas is celebrated every year on July 26.
