Pune: Over the past ten years, Nagpur has seen an increase in ‘wine culture’, as the general term for activities involving wine appreciation and wine-food pairings. This has been largely attributed to the efforts made by the Nagpur Wine Club.

As per further information, the Nagpur Wine Festival (NWF) celebrated its tenth anniversary on Sunday, December 3. By bringing together eminent Indian wineries, enthusiasts, and laypeople on one stage, it aims to establish a wine culture in one of the most improbable cities. The NWF was started back in 2013.

The Nagpur Wine Club’s founder recalled that even though it seemed like a crazy idea. The founder and other people had discussed the idea of launching a wine club back in 2007 or 2008. Since then, as Nagpurians have come to understand wine, they have witnessed enormous changes. The club founder went on to say that wine has its own manners and class. The distinction between wine and other alcoholic beverages is like between a ghazal and a rock song. The latter belongs to a distinct class. Wine has a snobbish value that varies depending on the type of wine and begins with the glass. Nagpurians have come to appreciate the various flavours of wine and now associate it with a ‘lifestyle’.

According to the founder-member of the Nagpur Agro Development Association, which is in charge of this event, the Nagpur Wine Club has the most members in all of India. Considering that Nagpur is neither a metro city nor has a climate that is conducive to vineyards, the city has come a long way in its appreciation of wine culture. Due to the event’s high profile, all of the top wineries in the nation reserve stalls in the event.
