Aamir Khan Discusses the Real Reasons Behind India’s Lack of Oscar Nominations
Aamir Khan has a differing opinion from Shah Rukh Khan regarding the reasons behind the lack of Indian film nominations at the Oscars.
Aamir Khan recently addressed the difficulties that Indian films encounter at the Oscars, expressing a differing viewpoint from Shah Rukh Khan’s previous remarks.
In a recent interview with BBC Asian Network, Aamir was informed of Shah Rukh Khan’s perspective on lack of nominations for Indian films at Oscars, to which Aamir expressed his disagreement.
“The reason why we don’t have nominations every year for India is because there are films from Iran, Germany, France, from all over the world which are very good films. You’re in very good company. To get nominated is a huge deal,” the Dangal star said.
Notably, no film has received a nomination in the international film category at the Oscars since Aamir’s acclaimed 2001 film, Lagaan.
“People forget that’s probably the toughest category at the Oscars. Because when you’re competing for Best Film, you’re competing with a limited number of films. But in the Best International Feature category, you’re actually competing with the best film from each country… And then you’re in an arena where there are 80 other films. And to be nominated among 80 films is itself tough,” says Aamir.
Aamir received information regarding Shah Rukh Khan’s remarks on the subject. In an earlier interview, Shah Rukh characterized Lagaan as a “blend of artistic and commercial cinema.” He highlighted the importance of Indian cinema in “transforming the framework of our films.”
SRK proposed that Indian cinema should evolve to meet global expectations, such as having shorter durations and fewer musical numbers, in order to satisfy the preferences of Academy members.
In response, Aamir pointed out Lagaan as a notable instance of a lengthy film rich in songs that successfully connected with audiences worldwide.
India has seen just three films nominated for the Best International Feature category throughout its history: Mother India in 1957, Salaam Bombay in 1988, and Lagaan in 2001.
