A two-year-old girl lost her life after being hit by a speeding car in Pune’s Alandi area. The victim, Shrutika Mirase, was reportedly run over by the car, resulting in her death on the spot.
The entire incident was captured on CCTV and the video has since gone viral on social media. Police have registered a case against the driver, identified as 26-year-old doctor Prathamesh Kokane, but have not arrested him. According to police, the sections of law applied in the case do not require immediate arrest, leading to public outrage.
The incident has once again raised questions about road safety and police action, especially in the wake of the Pune Porsche crash case.
According to eyewitnesses, the doctor allegedly tried to escape after the accident. However, local residents chased him and caught him near Chimbli Phata before handing him over to Alandi Police.
Residents present at the accident spot tried to stop the doctor, but he allegedly threw the car into reverse and attempted to flee. Locals chased him and managed to catch him near Chimbli Phata. He was then handed over to Alandi Police. However, police registered a case against him and later released him.
Police say they do not have sufficient grounds to make an arrest under the sections currently invoked. The decision has drawn criticism from citizens, who argue that the CCTV footage clearly shows the seriousness of the incident and are demanding stricter action against the accused.
