Advocate requests extension for ITR filing deadline amidst severe weather disruptions
Advocate Ritesh Yeolekar has formally requested the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) to extend the deadline for filing Income Tax Returns (ITR) for the assessment year 2024-25. This appeal comes in response to the severe weather conditions currently affecting Maharashtra and Gujarat, which have significantly disrupted daily life and posed challenges for taxpayers.
In his statement, Yeolekar pointed out that the ongoing heavy rains have led to extensive flooding and damage to infrastructure, creating considerable obstacles for individuals trying to access necessary documents and complete their tax returns. “The torrential rains have caused widespread flooding, making it exceedingly difficult for many to adhere to the July 31 deadline,” he remarked.
The call for an extension is timely given the current situation. As per the advocate, the CBDT, recognizing the challenges posed by the extreme weather, is currently reviewing the possibility of extending the ITR filing deadline. This extension would provide taxpayers additional time to gather their documents and fulfill their filing obligations without the added stress of adverse weather conditions.
Yeolekar’s appeal reflects a growing concern among taxpayers and legal experts about the impact of natural disasters on financial deadlines. The situation highlights the need for flexibility in such deadlines to accommodate unforeseen circumstances that can affect large sections of the population.
