Air India Cancels 60 US-Bound Flights Due To Maintenance And Supply Chain IssuesÂ
Air India, owned by the Tata Group, has cancelled around 60 flights between India and the United States scheduled for November and December. The cancellations, affecting flights to and from New York, Newark, Washington, San Francisco, and Chicago, are attributed to maintenance of wide-body aircraft and supply chain constraints.
The impacted flights operate from Mumbai, Delhi, and Bangalore. An Air India spokesperson stated, “Due to delayed aircraft maintenance returns and supply chain constraints, reducing our operating fleet, we regretfully cancelled a small number of flights until end-December.”
Affected passengers have been informed and offered alternative flights, free date changes, or full refunds. Air India apologized for the inconvenience.
This reduction in flights may impact air fares during the peak Christmas season. Currently, Air India operates 28 narrow-body and wide-body aircraft for passenger and cargo services.
To upgrade its ageing fleet, Air India has ordered new aircraft from Airbus (20 A350-900s and 20 A350-1000s) and Boeing (20 Boeing 787 Dreamliners and 10 Boeing 777X). However, operational improvements are expected only in 2025, once the new aircraft are inducted.
In addition to international routes, Air India has also been cancelling or rescheduling domestic flights for operational reasons.
The cancellations have sparked concerns about Air India’s ability to meet demand during peak travel seasons.
