Two unidentified individuals broke into Kher’s office located on Veera Desai Road, as captured by closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage. The thieves were seen fleeing in an auto-rickshaw waiting nearby. Amboli police are currently examining the footage to identify and apprehend the culprits.

Expressing his dismay over the incident, Kher took to Twitter to share the news, stating, “Last night in my Veera Desai Road office, two thieves broke two doors and the entire safe from the Accounts Department, which they couldn’t break, and stole the negative of a film produced by our company.” He further added, “Our office has filed an FIR, and the police have assured us that the thieves will be caught very soon.”

The stolen items included a locker containing Rs 4.15 lakh in cash, earmarked for daily expenses, and the negative of his film “Maine Gandhi Ko Nahin Mara,” stored securely in a bag inside the locker. Kher, who has operated from this office for over three decades, was particularly distressed about the loss of the film negative, which holds sentimental and professional value.

The break-in was discovered by Kher’s office staff on Thursday morning when they found the main door forcibly opened and the locker missing. Office accountant Pravin Patil, who filed the police complaint, stated that the break-in occurred sometime after he closed the office at 9 pm on Wednesday, securing the cash in the locker.

“We are deeply saddened by this incident,” Patil said. “The thieves not only took the cash and the locker but also stole a bag and a brown bag, each valued at Rs 1,000, in which the film’s negative was stored.”

Anupam Kher, known for his prolific career in Indian cinema, remains hopeful that the police investigation, aided by CCTV footage, will lead to the swift apprehension of the culprits and the recovery of the stolen items.
